Most colds are caused by viruses and will usually improve on their own in 7-10 days.

How To Help Your Child

Do

  • Offer your child lots of fluids (water is best)

  • Flush the nose with saline nose solution – with or without suction

  • For children over 1 year, honey (1/2 to 1 teaspoon) can help soothe cough.

Don’t

  • Don’t give the child over the counter cough/cold medicine

When to Worry

 

Contact us by portal, texting or calling 503 400 3852 option 2 if child:

  • Child is having respiratory distress (see link for details) or working hard to breathe. Trouble or eating due to difficulty breathing

  • Peeing less than 1x every 12 hours

  • More than two days of increasing fever (100.5 or higher) not lowered by medication

  • Child is not alert and responsive:

  • Shallow, dry cough or noise when breathing out
